HAP’s Beach Brigade works to restore and improve Portland’s river-edge spaces to make them more welcoming and accessible to the community. Each event lasts about 1.5 hours and includes moving rock and concrete from the river’s edge, building trails, and restoring shallow-water habitat. While this is hard, hands-on work, it is uniquely rewarding to see the impact of your efforts in real-time.
The Beach Brigade is currently focused on Audrey McCall Beach (AMB) where we meet every Saturday in July and August from 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM. Volunteers meet in front of Firestation 21 on 5 SE Madison at 10:00 AM and we do a short walk to the beach clean-up location. Be sure to bring a swimsuit so you can have a chance to cool off and celebrate the fruits of your labor! This effort goes hand in hand with our Tuesday Splashdown event @ AMB which brings the community together to enjoy the beach we've worked hard to build. You can learn more and sign up for this volunteering opportunity on the SOLVE website here.
Beyond restoring habitat and increasing access to Portland’s “blue space,” the Beach Brigade is also a great team-building opportunity. Do you have a larger group and would like your team to come out for a clean up? Reach out to our Community Outreach Manager Sage (sage@humanaccessproject.com) for more details! We are happy to schedule your cleanup on a day of your choosing. All supplies are provided by HAP in partnership with SOLVE.
Keep posted on our email list, Instagram or Facebook for announcements of HAP Beach Brigade events. Join the Riverlution! Swimming and being at the waters edge are some of the great joys of living in Portland and its up to all of us to keep these places feeling safe and inviting. The HAP Beach Brigade is a great way to jump in to take care of the places we love and develop a culture of stewardship for our rivers.
